Several years later, after a break for college rugby, Dave took me on again for 400 and 800m races where I achieved pb's 50.4 & 1:56. I accepted that Steve had International commitments, but on several occasions, when I was track captain, Steve agreed to compete with us. Perhaps the most memorable, for myself, was the Southern Counties 4x400m relay championships 1974: Kevin Gill; Terry Paget; Ed Coffey & Steve Black, we took bronze medals. Leading off I recorded my fastest 400 50.4. I remember with great affection my time representing Beagles and Essex in the early 70s , and would probably say that we had one of the strongest squads in the country at the time.
Francis Cornwell Francis Cornwellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13968702893092025645noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4597568954340171366.post-86410742089183097462020-11-30T06:35:10.763+00:002020-11-30T06:35:10.763+00:00Correct email is: stephenblack803@gmail.comCorrect email is: stephenblack803@gmail.comAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04984424891047428002noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4597568954340171366.post-43412785018604146332020-11-30T05:50:59.974+00:002020-11-30T05:50:59.974+00:00I received a mention in this section (Steve Black)...I received a mention in this section (Steve Black) in relation to the 1973 season which I feel the need to clarify. In 1973 my best time over 400m hurdles was 50.9 (not 50.7, that was in the following year, 1974). The section also states that the club’s success that year was ‘without the help of international Steve Black’ which seems to imply lack of club commitment on my part. This bothers me because I always loved being a member of Essex Beagles and for many years up to that time, I was a stalwart of the club. During 1973 I had international race commitments. I also had race commitments as the captain of the Borough Road College athletics team, and I had several injuries to contend with (finally succumbing to achilles operations in early 1975 and the end of my athletics career). I tried my best to respond to Bob Mortimer’s many requests for me to compete for league competitions, but it wasn’t always possible. I am concerned that the comments in this section may imply that I lacked a commitment to the club, which was not the case.
Steve Black, Sydney, Australia.
